TEST - Much Ado About Nothing

A battle of wits becomes a battle of hearts
Shakespeare's Sparkling Comedy of Love and Wit
20 Nov ’26 - 21 Nov ’26

In sun-drenched Messina, soldiers return from war to a world of masked balls, witty banter, and romantic intrigue. When the sharp-tongued Beatrice and confirmed bachelor Benedick are tricked into falling in love, their friends' mischief leads to unexpected consequences.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of a Mediterranean estate, our production captures the intoxicating atmosphere of a society at play. The returning soldiers bring energy and swagger to a household ready for celebration, but beneath the festivities lie deeper currents of pride, honour, and vulnerability. At the centre are Beatrice and Benedick, two of Shakespeare's most beloved characters, whose "merry war" of insults masks a profound connection.

Watch as their friends conspire to make them see what everyone else already knows, whilst the sweet courtship of Hero and Claudio takes a sinister turn when the villainous Don John plots to destroy their wedding day.

This production features live Renaissance music performed by an onstage ensemble, with period dances choreographed for the masked ball sequence that opens the second act.

I do love nothing in the world so well as you: is not that strange?

Benedick, Act 4, Scene 1

Written around 1598-99, Much Ado About Nothing showcases Shakespeare's genius for romantic comedy and his deep understanding of human nature. The play examines how we perform for each other, how reputation can be destroyed by rumour, and how true love sees beyond surface appearances. Our production balances the play's sparkling wit with its darker themes of slander and betrayal, creating a complete theatrical experience that is both hilariously funny and genuinely moving.

From the witty verbal duels to the poignant moment when Hero is wrongly accused, from the comic incompetence of the watchmen to the joyful final reconciliations, every moment serves Shakespeare's exploration

Program

Act One

Soldiers return to Messina after victory in war, where Don Pedro, Claudio, and Benedick are welcomed by Leonato, governor of Messina. Claudio falls instantly for Leonato's daughter Hero, whilst Benedick and Leonato's niece Beatrice resume their "merry war" of witty insults. Don Pedro arranges Claudio's courtship of Hero, whilst plotting with friends to trick the confirmed bachelor Benedick and the disdainful Beatrice into falling in love. Meanwhile, Don Pedro's bitter brother Don John begins scheming to cause mischief and destroy the planned wedding.

Interval (20 minutes)

Act Two:

The schemes succeed—Beatrice and Benedick each believe the other is secretly in love with them, and their pride crumbles as genuine affection emerges. But at Hero's wedding, Don John's plot comes to fruition as Claudio publicly shames and rejects Hero based on false evidence of infidelity. Hero collapses, and the Friar suggests feigning her death to prove her innocence. The bumbling watchmen Dogberry and Verges have inadvertently uncovered the conspiracy. Truth emerges, Claudio repents, and in a final scene of reconciliation, both couples are united whilst the witty lovers continue their banter even as they head to the altar.
